must-see
Amelie- It’s impossible to be in a bad mood after watching this movie; it makes you want to make a difference in the world.
Firefly- So it’s really a TV show (Serenity is the movie based on the show), but it’s undoubtedly one of the best shows out there. Best described as a space western, but that doesn’t even begin to cover it.
Memento- Messes with your mind. Has Guy Pearce. Did you want something more?
Zoolander- I can quote more of this movie than is probably humanly necessary. But that doesn’t mean that I too can’t not die in a freak gasoline fire accident.
Dead Poets Society- The kind of movie that’s good every once in a while.
Burnt by the Sun- A fantastic Soviet film that contrasts a relaxing summer vacation and Stalin’s emerging repression. Oleg Menshikov is an awesome actor, by the way.
Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind- Another good quasi-romance movie that proves there’s more to Jim Carrey than Ace Venture and more to Kate Winslet than Titanic. Plus it’s got Elijah Wood.
Pulp Fiction- A classic by one of the greatest, with some of the greatest.
Revenger’s Tragedy- A movie based on a play I had to read for my Newberry course. Don’t let that fool you, it’s got Eddie Izzard AND the guy who plays Dr. Who
Battle Royale- Japanese kids on an island trying to kill each other. Lord of the Flies gone RIGHT.
Love Actually- One of the few sappy romance movies I can tolerate. It might have something to do with the presence of Colin Firth. AND Hugh Grant. *cough*
Cabin Fever- A third floor Bowman favorite.
Ravenous- Introduced to me by Laura, this is as amazing as any movie about cannibalism can be. Also a Guy Pearce production.
V for Vendetta- As a revolution-happy twentysomething, I like this movie a lot.
Pride and Prejudice- The miniseries, not the movie folks. Again, the CF/HG combo is deadly.
Fight Club- The first rule is, don’t talk about Fight Club.
Indiana Jones- I was debating between IJ and Star Wars and I assumed that the latter is really a given must-see. But there’s a special place in my heart for Indy.
Moulin Rouge- Ewan McGregor singing? Sign me up.
Lost in Translation- I think Eric said it best: This is an excellent movie in which absolutely nothing happens.
Closer- You either like this movie a lot or you despise it. I, obviously, belong to the former crowd.
